Frequently Asked Questions
What areas of the body can I exfoliate with a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub?
Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub was originally designed to expertly exfoliate the entire leg. However, with care, it can also be used to scrub other areas of the body such as back, arms, heel and feet. For example, if you intend to scrub your entire arm, you would decrease scrubbing pressure as needed because the skin there is more tender than your lower leg. Please be mindful of which areas of your body are more sensitive than others and adjust your scrubbing pressure as needed.
Avoid exfoliating your face or bikini area with Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub as skin at these areas may be more sensitive than your legs, arms, etc.
I tried to use the Maximum Exfoliation Method but didn't see any rolls/strings of dark dead skin come out like in the website pictures, why is this?
Reason 1: Your skin may not be adequately wet. Once you've adequately soaked your skin with warm water for at least 3 minutes, be sure to move that targeted body part away from the flow of shower water. Start scrubbing from your inner ankle with pressure similar to shaving and work you way up. This technique requires a little friction, hence the reason why you need to move away from the direct flow of water. However, do not pat/wipe your skin dry. Whatever water you have left on your skin at that moment is enough. Once skin begins to feel a little dry or the scrub begins to drag, simply splash some water on your skin to regain that perfect balance of friction and slip.
Reason 2: Your skin may be too slippery. Be sure to not apply soaps or shave before you scrub. This technique requires a little more friction and wetting your skin with warm water is all you need. If skin is too slippery from soaps, shaving cream, or lotions, you may not be able to achieve the desired effect.
Reason 3: You may have recently exfoliated. Did you recently use a grainy scrub or body brush? Remember, these dark rolls/strings are dead skin build up. If you've recently scrubbed your skin with another product, you may not see rolls upon rolls of dark dead skin.
It is important to remember that even if you DO NOT see rolls of dark excess dead skin, you are still receiving an effective exfoliation. Please DO NOT overly scrub in hopes of just seeing dead skin appear. If there is excess dead skin, it will come out with correct use. Excessively scrubbing with strong pressure may cause you to injure your skin (redness, irritation, etc.) unnecessarily. This is a hard, natural stone. Please proceed with care and follow instructions.
Please visit our How to Use for our usage instructions.
Why does my skin get red or irritated after using a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub?
This is a result of scrubbing little too hard, too long, or your skin being too dry during the scrubbing process. Remember, this is a hard natural stone so you cannot be as heavy-handed as you would when you are using traditional grainy scrubs or a loofah. When you first use this product, please read the directions provided with your shipment or go to our How to Use page.
As with any powerful at-home exfoliator, mild tenderness is normal and should subside quickly. Most importantly, once you use the Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub a few times, you will be more attuned to how it works, the amount of pressure that works best each body part, and the length of time you should spend on each body part.
Do not overly scrub in hopes to see large amounts of dead skin appear. If you have excess dead skin, it will appear with correct use. With or without large amounts of dead skin appearing, you will still achieve much softer and smoother legs and body.
Visit our How to Use page (there's a helpful short video) before proceeding and here are key tips to avoid redness and irritation:
- The amount of scrubbing strength or pressure is similar to the pressure you would use when shaving. You may build up scrubbing pressure slightly depending on your skin tolerance or when you get the hang of using this product.
- Let your Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub do the work. It's a hard stone with exfoliation abilities.
- During the scrubbing process, you may see and feel grainy "strings" of dead skin lift off from your skin. You may or may not see excess build-up every time you scrub- that is normal because you have not have the same dead skin build-up every single week.
- DO NOT scrub far beyond the recommended pressure (think shaving) simply because you want to see dead skin appear. If you have excess build-up, it will come off with gentle scrubbing. Scrubbing too hard may cause unnecessary redness and irritation. Once you get the hang of using this product, you may find yourself increasing and decreasing pressure as you see fit- which is great!
For best results, apply a gentle body moisturizer after your shower routine.
Is the Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub for all skin types?
The Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub works great on men and women with normal skin.
IMPORTANT: If you have sensitive skin, skin that burns under the sun easily, skin that gets red easily from being rubbed on, or have a history of being prone to redness or irritation from using general exfoliation products (creams, gels, physical scrubs, professional treatments, etc.), please contact us for a consultation before purchasing or use as this product may be too strong for you.
If you have sunburned, cracked, body acne breakouts, or injured skin, please do not exfoliate your skin with Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub (or any other exfoliation product) until your are fully healed or simply avoid scrubbing those areas until they are fully healed.
How often should I exfoliate my skin with a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub?
Like any effective exfoliator, you do not need to use it every day.
We recommend the Regular Exfoliation Method 1 to 2 times a week for those with normal skin. To perform the Maximum Exfoliation Method, please master the Regular Exfoliation Method first. The Maximum Exfoliation Method is great for those who have already gotten the hang of using this product, but has not exfoliated in a long period of time (sometimes you get busy, we totally get it!)
Additionally, another great time to use Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub is after a good work out so that it can remove excess grime and sweat.
When is a good time to use a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub?
Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub can be used any time, day or night. Interestingly, many clients have reported that they like using their Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub during their night time shower routine so that they can cocoon their skin and in moisturizer for the rest of the night. Furthermore, any mild redness that occurs from accidental strong scrubbing will have its time to subside by morning. Again, scrubbing hard is not necessary- let the stone do the work!
If you have a special event or intend to fake tan, shave, or wax, we recommend that you gently scrub your legs with Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub 1-2 days before so that your skin is properly prepped.
The first time I tried the Maximum Exfoliation Method, so much gunk came off my skin. However, the very next day, I didn't see so much gunk come off. Why is this?
Sounds like your first exfoliation was a really successful one therefore you did not have much gunk come off the second time! We recommend give your skin a few days to regenerate and follow up with the Regular Exfoliation Method for maintenance. Remember, you do not need to scrub your skin every day. Also, if you happen to miss a few weeks of scrubbing, it would be natural to see more dead skin appear when you perform the Maximum Exfoliation Method.
Please note that depending on how often you exfoliate, the color of your dead skin will vary as well. If you have not exfoliated in a long period of time, the color of the dead skin will be darker. If you exfoliate frequently, the color of the dead skin will be lighter and may not be as visible. However, you may be able to feel its grainy, stringy texture when you glide your fingertips across your skin.
How long will a Dermastone™ body scrub last me?
With proper care, a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub can last a lifetime! It's a great investment! Never buy a traditional body scrub every again!
How does Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub work to get rid of ingrown hair on my legs?
Another benefit of scrubbing your skin with a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub is that it may help to release superficial ingrown hairs from under dry patches of dead skin. This can help you get a really close and effective shave or wax. Remember, ingrown hair happens when layer upon layer of dead skin sits on the skin and prevents the hair from poking through.
With regular exfoliation, you are more likely to prevent ingrowns from happening.
To ensure that you clear away excess dead skin before hair removal, we recommend that you exfoliate with a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub 1-2 days BEFORE you intend to shave or wax so that your skin is fully prepped and not over-exfoliated (remember, shaving and waxing does exfoliate your skin as well). Additionally, if you have recently shaved or waxed, please wait 1-2 days BEFORE using Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub. Again, we do not recommend exfoliating your face and bikini area with a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub as the skin there is more tender.
Can I use Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub if I regularly fake tan?
Yes. If you fake or spray tan, exfoliating with a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub helps to create a smooth, flake-free canvas for fake tanning. After exfoliation, we recommend that you use a gentle, non-exfoliating moisturizer to seal in the moisture and softness. Once you apply your fake tan, you may choose to exfoliate your skin less frequently to prolong your tan. Additionally, if you discovered tanning streaks, you may use your Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub to gently exfoliate the heavier colored areas on your legs, arms, or back.
Can I shave, wax, or use other exfoliation products immediately after scrubbing my skin with a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub?
We recommend that you exfoliate with a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub 1-2 days BEFORE you intend to shave or wax so that your skin is fully prepped and not over-exfoliated (remember, shaving and waxing does exfoliate your skin as well). Additionally, if you have recently shaved or waxed, please wait 1-2 days BEFORE using Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub.
If you love using exfoliating beads or exfoliating body moisturizers with acids (AHA, BHA, etc.), you can continue to use these products on days that you did not exfoliate your skin with a Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub.
What are the benefits of regular exfoliation?
Exfoliating tired, dead skin also speeds up the skin renewal process, allowing new healthy skin to take their place. This process turns your skin from dull and dry to bright, vibrant, and smooth. In addition, regular exfoliation helps keep your skin feeling much softer! Plus, by getting rid of dead skin frequently, you're able to help prevent ingrowns or release them from the skin for a truly close shave or effective wax.
Is Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub a pumice stone or volcanic rock?
No. Pumice stones and volcanic rocks are have a much rougher and sharper texture as they are designed to exfoliate very rough skin on the feet. Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub features a smoother and finer texture and is designed for exfoliating legs, but can be used with care on the back, arms, heel, and feet.
How do I clean my Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub?
After every use, rinse your Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub well and allow it to air dry or even sun dry.
For a deeper cleaning, apply liquid dish detergent to an old toothbrush and scrub all sides of the stone for several minutes. Rinse well with water and air dry or sun dry. To sterilize your Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub, you may also boil it in a pot of water for 5 minutes.
We do not recommend sharing your Dermastone™ Leg & Body Scrub for hygienic reasons (similar to how we wouldn't recommend anyone share their loofah, razor, or toothbrush).
HAPPY SCRUBBING & ENJOY YOUR SMOOTH SKIN!
